Calico Critters (sometimes known as Sylvanian Families) are very cute, VERY well made, highly detailed and they inspire real creative play.  Yes…the price is slightly high.  Push past that.  They are ideal for a wide range of kids…I’d guess between 3 and 7.  Do be mindful that many sets come with small pieces, so be aware of choking hazards.

So many toys today feel like junk.  They break.  The plastic is thin and cheap.  Calico Critters are a rare exception…Ideal for birthdays, Tooth Fairy, Easter, Christmas or as a surprise.

The big issue many have is what to get first.  The amount to choose from can be overwhelming.  If new to the world of Cloverleaf Corners, it would probably be best to start with these first…then build up a collection:

This is the best set to start with.  Skip the starter home…it’s too small.  Take the leap and dive in.  The Gift Set comes with some more furniture….

You’re in deep now, so your setup might as well look cool.  This Treehouse looks nice next to the Townhome and gets lots of play.  There is a gift set version of this, but I’d skip it, save the money and just get the Treehouse.  You can always buy more furniture later.

There are quite a few shops to choose from, but this one is the most straightforward…and Critters need to eat.  Highly recommended.

After that…start buying a few more families.  Use the handy mini-poster to show your kids and see which creatures resonate.  Good luck!

Also well worth pointing out a great YouTube series where you can watch these toys in action.  Our daughter is addicted to watching these…but be careful…after she watches, she’s liable to want whatever she just watched.
